Recovery Coach Commission – Listening Session – Marketing Collateral

Working with the Recovery Coach Commission internal team, I was given the task to complete marketing material that would be used on and offline.

To start this process, a meeting was called by the team to speak to us on the Communications team as to the best practices and possibilities. We sat down and explained the different ways that the message could be sent out. We spoke about media advisories, social media letting them know that timing was key in all of this to gain as much attention as possible. We went over best practices when working with reporters, key words to use on the pieces, etc. A whole host of subject matters were discussed and because there were going to be a few of these listening sessions, they needed to make sure that they had everything in place with proper understanding of how it all works!

After the meeting, I got to work. With a deadline to be passed in for review before the holiday season, I was able to pass in this first version. But after consultation, I was told that it wouldn’t work because the Secretary didn’t want the sessions to be all about her which is understandable, but when creating, I told my colleague it could help to attract more of the public, but that wasn’t the case with this. Also, the direction that I took with this wasn’t what she/they envisioned, plus just being the draft, the words were all over the place – they weren’t flowing correctly, I can admit that, but really, I was looking to see how they would feel about the layout direction, but it was turned down, so onto the next!

After receiving the critique, went and created this second version. Again, it was similar to another version I had done previously, but after looking at it, it just wasn’t all there for me and the team! It was nice and got the point across, but it could use more, it could be better!

So then, back to the drawing board and this time, enter another colleague where we sat down together to really see if we could get the “it” factor for this flyer. We discussed a few ways in which we could improve it. We discussed the fonts, serif vs. sans, we talked about maybe even moving some of the layout around so that it could “come together” better, and we also talked about the placement of the state seal!

Based off of our conversation, and new direction we wanted to take, I ended up delivering this product right here.

A couple of points to note from this project:

  • there wasn’t any need to go crazy with imagery, something that would be light and subtle
  • a sans serif font worked well with this – Century Gothic
  • we moved the wording from the left hand side and placed it in the middle giving it an even flow along with the seal
  • also, of the color palette used for this project – gold and blue, really wanted to see how we could start to use and build more collateral around these colors

On this project, I worked on the full design/layout direction lending my voice and expertise in best ways in which we could make the most of the space, keep it to the point, but also making it look a bit interesting as well!
